The Centre for Science and Environment Studies or abbreviated to KIAS (the Malay acronym) “KIAS” is an existing word in Bahasa Melayu (kias) which originally stems from the Arabic (qiyas). The term, qiyas in Usul Fiqh knowledge refers to reasoning by analogy or analogical reasoning while, in Mantik knowledge (logic), the term means syllogistic reasoning. Both are among the most important methods of thinking in any fields, including Science.
Overall Orientation of KIAS
In general, the orientation of KIAS in terms of academic is similar to the focus and breadth of centres or departments of institutions of higher learning that conduct the areas or fields known as Science and Technology Studies (STS). The field taken from its relations with the various fields of pure science is characterised as meta-disciplined or second-order discipline and focuses on research and ademic detailing of issues on thought and philosophy, values and morals, socio-economic-politics and others which arise out of backgrounding the development of Science and Technology.
