Centre for the Study of Shari’ah, Law & Politics (SYARAK)
The SYARAK centre began with the SYARAK and Law Unit in 1992, the first academic unit created after the establishment of IKIM. As one of the three academic Centres that exists today, SYARAK serves the IKIM mission and vision by providing the real understanding of Islam to Muslims and non-Muslims within the country and abroad.
Research is a core activity for IKIM. The Institute carries out research activities in various fields, especially with regard to Islam and Muslims. As an academic Centre, the fields of study in SYARAK are divided into several categories (see below). The variety of fields of study are in accordance with the fact that Islam is a complete way of life that encompasses all aspects of the human life.
Areas of SYARAK research include aspects related to:
1) Legislation such as the Philosophy of Law, Comparative Law, the Judicial System
2) Shari’ah such as the concept of Maqasid al-Shari’ah, Islamic Family Law, Muamalah, Crime, Fatwanisation
3) Religious aspects within the scope of Shari’ah in its broad understanding such as the Islamic Worldview, Islamic Education, etc.
