KUALA LUMPUR: A set of Islamic standards will be introduced to the services and management sector, said Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (Ikim) chairman Tan Sri Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid.
He said the standards would assist Islamic-based organisations practise quality management from the Islamic perspective and enhance corporate governance.
“From the organisation’s point of view, the standards will act as a business management guideline conforming with Islamic concepts and principles,” he said.
Ahmad Sarji said the standards were an enhancement of the ISO system.
“Islam is syumul (comprehensive) as it encompasses every aspect of our work in addition to our faith,” he said after presenting prizes to winners of the 2005 Ikim Islamic political science competition at the Ikim building here yesterday.
“When the new Islamic standards are applied to an organisation, it conforms with the needs of the syariah.
“The idea is based on guidelines found in the Quran, hadith (sayings of the Prophet Muhammad), ijmak (popular consensus) and fatwa (religious decrees).”
He also launched a book titled Quality Standard from the Islamic Perspective.
The standards were being prepared by a committee represented by Ikim, Sirim and the Department of Standards at the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.
