The international online scientific-practical symposium on “The Maturidiyya Teachings and the Present”
On June 16, 2021, the Imam Maturidi International Scientific Research Center under the International Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan held an online scientific-practical symposium “The Maturidiyya Teachings and the Present.”
In recent years, large-scale work has been carried out in Uzbekistan to study the lives and rich scientific heritage of thinkers and scientists who have made an invaluable contribution to the development of world science and to convey their scientific legacy to the international community. In particular, the establishment of the Imam Maturidi International Scientific Research Center, established on the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, is an important part of the systemic reforms in the field of religion and enlightenment.
The land of Uzbekistan has long been a center of knowledge and culture. Imam Bukhari, Mahmud Zamakhshari, Abu Mansur Maturidi, Abul Muin Nasafi, Muhammad Khwarizmi, Ahmad Farghani, Abu Rayhan Biruni, Abu Ali ibn Sina, Mirzo Ulugbek and many other renowned scholars who grew up in this land, made a huge contribution to the development of secular sciences along with Islamic sciences, in particular, to the development of world civilization.
In order to inform the international community about the life and rich scientific heritage of Imam Maturidi and his followers, as well as the teachings of Maturidiyya an international online scientific-practical symposium on “The teachings of Maturidiyya and Present Time” was held by the Imam Maturidi International Scientific Research Center under the International Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan. Partner organizations of the event were international organizations such as ICESCO, IRCICA, Institute of Islamic Understanding Malaysia (IKIM), Al-Azhar Islamic Research Academy, Imam Maturidi Research Center of Seljuk University, International Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan, the Center for Islamic Civilization in Uzbekistan, Imam Bukhari International Scientific Research Center, and Imam Tirmidhi International Scientific Research Center.
Members of the International Scientific Board under the Imam Maturidi International Scientific Research Center, representatives of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education, the Committee on Religious Affairs, the Muslim Board of Uzbekistan, the Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the Tashkent State Institute of Oriental Studies, local and well-known foreign scientists, the world’s leading research institutions, researchers conducting research in the field, and experts participated in the symposium.
The symposium was also attended by the scholars of Islamic studies and Maturidiyya teachings from more than a dozen countries, including Malaysia, the Arab Republic of Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Germany, Sweden, France, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, and Afghanistan.
During the symposium, the participants discussed some significant issues such as the essence of the Maturidiyya teachings, the role of Maturidi scholars in the development of this doctrine, the importance of Maturidiyya teachings in ensuring moderation, the study of the scientific heritage of Imam Maturidi, and the research on the coverage of doctrinal issues in Maturidiyya teachings.
At the same time, at the symposium, scholars expressed their views on the peculiarities of the doctrine of Maturidiyya. In particular, the role and importance of Maturidiyya teachings in finding solutions to current ideological issues and the moderation of this doctrine was recognized by the participants. The participants also considered the issues of informing the international community about the scientific heritage of Imam Maturidi and his followers.
At the symposium, the presentation of the books prepared for publication by the Center such as the 29th volume of Imam Maturidi’s “Tawilat al-Qur’an”, Mullah Ali Qari’s “Sharh al-Fiqh al-Akbar”, Burhanuddin Marghinani’s “Al-Hidaya”, 10 brochures under the heading “Scholars of our country”, “International Islamic organizations”, “Moderation against bigotry: methods and analysis”, “Current refutations”, “Fanatic groups under the guise of Islam”, as well as the first issue of the scientific-educational journal “The Maturidiyya” were held.
The international experts, specialists, and scientists who participated in the symposium approved that the papers of the participants and other scientific results would be published in a compilation.
In addition, a ceremony was held to award the winners of the competition among students under the heading “Followers of Imam Maturidi” in the nominations for the best article, the best video, and the best infographic.
In order to provide comprehensive support to young researchers, the symposium organized special sessions for doctoral students, researchers, and students entitled “Imam Maturidi in the eyes of young researchers”, “Problems of modern Islamic studies.” The young researchers from various educational and research centers of the Republic attended these sessions with their articles.
The Imam Maturidi International Scientific Research Center serves as an important platform for introducing the doctrine of Maturidiyya to the world and conveying moderate teachings in the Islamic world to the international community.
